Summer Time and Sun Safety!

We love to be outdoors! Summer time if full of beach days, laying pool side, backyard BBQs, hiking in the mountains, and tropical vacations. Sun safety is one of the most important health precautions to prioritize during the summer. A sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15 is fine for daily use, but if you’re spending an extended amount of time outdoors, pick a water-resistant formula with an SPF of at least 30.

Maximize your fun outdoors with these tips and tricks:

  • Sunscreen (at least SPF 30)
  • UPF-protective clothing (ultraviolet protective factor)
  • Polarized UV-protective sunglasses (99%+ recommended)
  • Sun umbrella or tent
  • Wide-brimmed hat

Sun safety experts suggest that everyone, regardless of age, protects their skin by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30, avoid the sun during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and wear a wide-brimmed hat. When applying sunscreen, don’t forget areas like the ears, hands and backs of knees. And be sure to reapply at least every two hours—more often if you’re swimming or sweating. Use one ounce of sunscreen, about the amount that would fit into a shot glass, to cover the entire body. For the face, a nickel-sized dollop works.

Protect your skin with annual skin checks, wear sunscreen daily (not just during the summer) and take precautions when in the sun!
